FUN WITH ALGEBRA WORKSHOPS

Grades 1-2:  There is no doubt that young children are puzzled when they encounter a variety of unfamiliar symbols, signs, and patterns.  Why are there letters used instead of numbers? And why some of the numbers are missing in a strange structure people call an equation?  The goal of this workshop is to show that even as early as in the first and second grades algebra should not be intimidating for young learners if presented in an interactive and engaging way with the variety of visual and instrumental approaches. Students and parents are invited to play and learn!  Parents please be present!

Grades 3-4:  In grades 3 and 4, a missing number in an equation is no longer a miracle for students as by that time most of them are comfortable with generalizing and reasoning about numbers. At this point, the focus is shifting to understanding algebra within a greater variety of operations and getting a glimpse at the first elements of Number Theory. This workshop shows how early algebra can help deepen students’ understanding of the meaning of the major mathematical operations and their order. This results in greater proficiency in calculations and generally boosting cognitive skills. Students and parents are invited!

Grades 5-6: In grade 5-6 we build on already developed body of mathematical knowledge. Our focus shifts to understanding the relationships between different branches of mathematics, with a variety of concepts simultaneously used to solve particular problem. Students and parents are invited.
